Support for Alternative Learning Programs and Schools in North Carolina

The purpose of this RC6 project is to develop a statewide Alternative Learning Programs and Schools (ALPS) Community of Practice (CoP) network in North Carolina. The aim is to encourage collaboration and problem solving towards using evidence-based strategies specific to the alternative setting. The project provides support to the SEA and LEAs by (a) creating a statewide network for ALPS leaders to collaborate and learn from each other; (b) providing information on a range of evidence-based strategies/solutions for improving student engagement and outcomes (e.g., competency-based education); (c) developing an ALPS framework of competencies that define leadership and instruction in the alternative learning environment; and (d) using data and indicators to identify areas of strength and potential growth. This project assumes a two-part approach to supporting ALPS leaders in North Carolina.

  1. Support for Human Capacity involves inviting principals and teachers from ALPS to participate in a Community of Practice (CoP). RC6 in collaboration with NCDPI is providing:
    • professional development regarding evidence-based strategies (e.g., for working with students experiencing trauma);
    • virtual discussions where participants can work collaboratively through their problems of practice; and
    • a virtual conference focused on current research, best practices, and networking with peers.
  2. Support for Organizational Capacity at the SEA and LEA levels involves conducting an end-of-school year analysis using survey and other data from ALPS principals to obtain their feedback on challenges and future professional development needs (for both school leaders and teachers). This analysis will increase the capacity of NCDPI and LEAs to provide professional development or other support that addresses ALPS network needs.
