These students may be able to read sentences and short paragraphs. Continue to build fluency with reading words and decodable text. Enrich their vocabulary skills by guiding discussions about words from stories you read aloud. This will promote the understanding of word meanings and provide opportunities to use these new words in different contexts. Develop their comprehension skills by providing opportunities to focus on thinking about the text (e.g., answering wh- questions, identifying the main idea, summarizing the story). Writing activities encourage these students to express their thoughts, while conveying their understanding of the meanings of oral and written language.
