Your reading program most likely covers the five componets of reading; however, if a certain area is not addressed you can supplement instruction in that area. Please see Supplemental and Intervention Programs for additional information.

While the teacher is working with a small group, the rest of the class should be actively engaged in independent student reading centers. The teacher should introduce these student center activities in a whole group or in a small group and make sure the students are able to perform the activity independently before using it at a center. Please see Student Center Activities for activities to use in independent student centers.

Next is an example of a schedule for small and whole group reading instruction. The time schedule is based on the instructional needs of the students (i.e., the data from the Class Status Report for this sample kindergarten class).
