Second Grade Group 1

Group 1 is your smallest and most intensive instructional group. In the sample reading block schedule, this group is scheduled for small group instruction everyday for at least twenty-five to thirty minutes. Since these students are significantly below grade level in the development of phonics skills (NWF) and oral reading fluency (ORF) at mid-year, they should also receive intervention outside the reading block. These students may also be behind in vocabulary and comprehension skills. Instruction should focus on letter-sound correspondence and blending while integrating activities that help students learn word meanings. In order to plan your instruction for these students, you need to know more about what skills they have mastered, and what skills to teach next. You can get this information as you answer the guiding questions highlighted below. The additional questions are provided for you to learn more about the needs of these students in the other instructional areas.
