A Florida State University Center

First Grade Group 1

Group 1 is the smallest and most intensive instructional group. The students in this group are significantly below grade level in the development of their knowledge about letters (LNF, NWF) and in their phonemic awareness (PSF). These students are most likely also behind in vocabulary and comprehension skills. Instruction should focus on phonemic awareness and phonics while also integrating activities that help students learn word meanings. In order to plan your instruction for these students, you need to know a little more about their level of development in phonemic awareness and letter knowledge. You can get this information as you answer the guiding questions highlighted below. The additional questions are provided for you to learn more about the needs of these students in the other instructional areas.
