A Florida State University Center

First Grade Group 4

Continue to build the studentís reading skills by teaching words with initial and final consonant blends (e.g., street, mask), digraphs (e.g., chin), and diphthongs (e.g., boy, soil). Also, follow the sequence of instruction in your reading program to teach syllable patterns, spelling patterns/rules, and morpheme patterns to enable these students to read more challenging text.

Additionally, provide opportunities for this group to read and discuss text at the studentsí instructional level. This instruction with advanced text vocabulary and effective comprehension strategies will further increase reading performance as the text becomes more difficult to read. These students should be able to rely on their decoding skills as well as their vocabulary and comprehension skills to read and understand more difficult text.
