A Florida State University Center

Second Grade Group 3

The third group has five students. In the sample reading block schedule, this group is scheduled for small group instruction three times a week, for ten to fifteen minutes each day. They have a moderate to advanced understanding of letter/sound relationships (NWF), and their Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) is very close to the mid-year benchmark. With targeted instruction, they have a good chance of reaching the ORF benchmark of 90 by the end of second grade. They would most likely benefit from additional instruction to strengthen their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills, as the demands of reading become more challenging. Once you answer the guiding questions below, you will get a better idea of where to begin instruction for each student.
